On June 2, 2024, as alumni weekend came to a close at the University of Georgia (UGA), the university's Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) chapter held an emergency protest in support of Palestine at the Arch.
The protest was held to promote safety for all community members, including Palestinian Arabs.
SJP members stated that UGA had failed its students by not working with them on this issue.
Protesters chanted "Columbia, you will see, we are all SJP" and "We will free Palestine."
Maryam Iqbal BC 27, a member of SJP, said, "To shut us down you have only made us stronger."
SJP called on everyone nationwide to come to NYC on Labor Day September 2nd to show support for Palestine.
The protest comes amidst heightened tensions in the Middle East following recent violence between Israelis and Palestinians.
