Gavaskar's Concerns Over India's Batting Depth
Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar has expressed concerns over India's batting depth in the wake of their disappointing performance in the first Test against New Zealand. India were bowled out for 226 in their first innings and 165 in their second, with only Shubman Gill managing to score a half-century.Gavaskar believes that India's batting lineup lacks the depth and experience to compete against top-quality bowling attacks. "I am worried about India's batting," Gavaskar said. "We don't have enough depth in our batting lineup. The inclusion of Washington Sundar in the playing XI for the second Test is a sign of desperation."
Gavaskar's Criticism of Washington Sundar
Gavaskar was particularly critical of the decision to include Sundar in the team ahead of Hanuma Vihari, a specialist batsman with a proven track record in Test cricket."I don't understand why Hanuma Vihari was left out of the team," Gavaskar said. "He is a much better batsman than Washington Sundar. I think India made a mistake by not selecting him for the second Test."
Gavaskar's Suggestions for Improvement
Gavaskar believes that India need to make some changes to their batting lineup if they want to win the second Test and level the series. He suggested that India should consider recalling Ajinkya Rahane, who was dropped for the first Test, and opening the batting with Shubman Gill."I think India should recall Ajinkya Rahane," Gavaskar said. "He is a senior batsman with a lot of experience. He can provide stability to the middle order."
"I also think India should open the batting with Shubman Gill," Gavaskar added. "He is a young player with a lot of talent. He has shown that he can score runs against top-quality bowling attacks."
